A bit of history… Literally translated as ‘Donna Karen New York’, DKNY is a New York-based fashion house founded in 1984, with a younger, more affordable line, released in 1989. DKNY clothing was designed for the professional woman; a fashionable and chic brand that revolutionized office wear. However, frustrated by her daughter’s continuous wardrobe raids and subsequent realisation that there was a significant void in the market, Donna Karen designed her diffusion line five years later. Not only a range for the modern teenager, but one that featured ground-breaking items with androgynous and gender fluid designs, wrapping men’s ties around female models’ waists and promoting loose fitting t-shirts for all.
DKNY’s unmistakeable logo made it into the 90s streetwear culture with ease, utilising its New York associations to promote itself as an urban and modern brand. More recently, supermodels, notably Cara Delevingne, have been part of a campaign returning to the 90s style, with extensive t-shirt dresses and chunky jumpsuits.
